Three Golf Experiences In One

Jack Nicklaus
|
A Jack Nicklaus Signature Golf Course is always a
rewarding experience. But, add the unspoiled beauty of Bayside’s natural
setting and you have something truly remarkable. This layout plays from
the salt marshes to the meadows to the woodlands. This provides three
uniquely different golfing experiences rarely found all on one course.
Salt Marshes
Water is present on every one of the 18 holes on this spectacular golf
course. For some holes it’s in the form of a strategically designed
water hazard, while other holes are bordered by pristine wetlands and
marshlands where it is easy to come across a heron or egret feeding in
their natural habitat – a beautiful, coastal boundary.
Meadows
Open and inviting, many of the holes at Bayside offer generous fairways
on which to land the perfect tee shot. The greens and tees are comprised
of tightly manicured A-series Bentgrass while the welcoming fairways
boast a seaside blend. The roughs are made up of a challenging
combination of Tall Fescues and Blue Grass.
Woodlands
Trees, trees and more trees line the fairways of this serene course.
From majestic pines to flowering dogwoods and black cherries, these
native forests stand and protect an abundant species of birds and
wildlife. This wooded boundary determines the course layout of
interesting curves and secluded hallows, providing a stunning backdrop
for a day of play on the links.

This “bear” of a par 5 demands a unique blend of
power and finesse. The double-dogleg journey starts with a long tee shot
to a generous fairway flanked by a scenic lake on the right and Roy
Creek on the left. The second shot is framed by towering pine trees and
protected by strategically placed bunkers that will require a
risk/reward decision from the golfer. The remaining yardage on the
approach shot will place a premium on a delicate short iron that must
negotiate a cavernous bunker protecting the front of the green. The
longest par 5 on the course concludes at a large and undulating green
surrounded by dramatic creek and bay views of the vernacular coastal
landscape.

When formulating a strategy to attack this beautiful
and exciting golf hole, many alternatives present themselves. The
silhouette of a singular specimen tree bisects the horizon of the
landing area, which results in two distinct angles of approach into the
green. The narrower right side of the fairway is protected by an
intimidating lake, but yields a preferred angle into the green.. A drive
to the left side of the fairway might be the safer play off the tee, but
results in a more precarious approach shot played back towards water
hugging the right side of the green. The green is defined by three
distinct pin placement zones that characterize the flexible design
style, which allows the course to be set up for golfers of varying
abilities. The 10th hole exemplifies the unique strategy of the golf
course that translates into an unforgettable golf experience.

The serene setting for this visually stunning par 3
may obscure the golfer’s thought process as they step onto the tee. A
pristine salt marsh surrounds the green site while majestic pine trees
provide a dramatic backdrop for the shortest par 3 on the course.
Accuracy is at a premium on this tee shot to a small narrow green
guarded by bunkers on the left and right. This spectacular par 3 is
destined to become a trademark of Bayside—challenging golf integrated
into a diverse blend of magnificent natural scenery.
